Pradeep Sarkar is an Indian film director and screenwriter known for his realistic and socially conscious approach to filmmaking. Born on April 20, 1952, in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, Sarkar started his career in advertising, working as a copywriter and creative director before transitioning to filmmaking.


Early Career in Advertising


Sarkar began his career in advertising in the late 1970s, working as a copywriter for agencies like Clarion and Lintas. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a creative director and winning several awards for his work in advertising.



During his time in advertising, Sarkar developed a keen eye for visual storytelling and a deep understanding of how to connect with audiences through narrative. These skills would serve him well in his later career as a filmmaker.


Transition to Filmmaking


In the early 2000s, Sarkar decided to pursue his lifelong dream of making films. He began by writing screenplays for several films, including the romantic drama "Chhal" (2002) and the crime thriller "Satta" (2003).


Sarkar made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed film "Parineeta" in 2005. The film starred Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan and was an adaptation of the novel by the same name by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.



The film was a commercial success, grossing over 200 million rupees at the box office. It received several awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for Vidya Balan. The film also marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between Sarkar and Balan, who would go on to star in several of his films.


"Parineeta" was praised for its sensitive portrayal of the love story between Balan and Khan's characters, as well as its attention to detail in recreating the period setting of 1960s Kolkata. The film showcased Sarkar's talent for visual storytelling and his ability to elicit strong performances from his actors.


Following the success of "Parineeta," Sarkar directed "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag" (2007), a drama film that starred Rani Mukerji, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Jaya Bachchan. The film dealt with themes of female empowerment and societal expectations of women.


Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film was a moderate commercial success. It showcased Sarkar's commitment to telling stories that centered on women and their struggles in patriarchal societies.


In 2010, Sarkar directed "Lafangey Parindey," a romantic drama starring Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone. The film, set in the world of street fighting in Mumbai, received mixed reviews and was a commercial failure.


Sarkar's next film was "Mardaani" (2014), a crime thriller starring Rani Mukerji. The film dealt with the issue of human trafficking and received positive reviews from critics. The film's success led to a sequel, "Mardaani 2," which was released in 2019.
